Laphont gold melting watch inspired by Salvador Dali

The Surreal Story Behind Melting Watches

Few images in art are as instantly recognizable as a clock drooping over a branch like soft cheese. Nearly a century after it was painted, the melting watch still fascinates us, and today you can wear one on your wrist.

The Persistence of Memory

In 1931 Salvador Dalí painted The Persistence of Memory, a small oil canvas now held in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York. In a quiet, dreamlike landscape, pocket watches sag and melt over a tree branch, the edge of a ledge and a strange sleeping form. As the often-told story goes, Dalí was inspired after watching Camembert cheese soften in the heat.

Whatever its origin, the image struck a nerve. The melting watch became a symbol of surrealism itself: time made soft and personal, bending to memory and dreams rather than ticking with mechanical certainty.

Why the image still resonates

We live by the clock. Schedules, deadlines and notifications keep time rigid. The melting watch suggests something different: that the hours we remember most are the ones that seemed to stretch or disappear, and that our experience of time is fluid. That idea feels as relevant today as it did in 1931, which is why the motif keeps returning in design, fashion and pop culture.

From canvas to wrist

Designer watch brand Laphont takes that surreal idea literally. Inspired by Dalí's painting, its melting watches have cases and dials that appear to flow across the wrist, finished in silver-tone chromium alloy or 14K gold plating. They come in oval, round and square forms, from small, delicate sizes to bold statement pieces.

Laphont's wider collection explores the same sculptural spirit: the Situ, with a textured, hand-formed-looking case; the Striata, with an Art Deco-inspired fluted dial; the symmetric Nova; and the jewel-like Gem, set with colorful zircon stones around a mother of pearl dial.

How to wear a statement watch

  • Let it lead. A melting watch is a conversation piece. Keep other wrist pieces minimal so its shape stands out.
  • Match your metals. Pair the gold versions with gold rings and chains, and the silver-tone ones with white metals, for a polished look.
  • Gift it to the art lover. For someone who has everything, wearable surrealism is a gift they will not forget.
