Gold-filled jewelry has a thick layer of 14K gold bonded to a base metal. In the US, a piece can only be called gold-filled if the gold makes up at least 1/20 of its total weight, which is far more gold than plated or vermeil pieces carry. It is a practical choice for everyday chains, hoops and stacking pieces when solid gold is outside the budget.
